Grounded in Place
Matilda Halley works from Driving Creek Pottery in the Coromandel, her practice shaped by a deep connection to land and material. Trained across Japan, India, The Leach Pottery in Cornwall, and throughout Aotearoa, she draws on traditional pottery methods grounded in locality.
Using clays formed from the peninsula’s ancient volcanic landscape and glazes derived from local rock, sediment, and ash, each piece is gathered, processed, and made by hand. Fired in the kiln and returned to stone, her work carries a quiet sense of origin, process, and place.
